Making Play Dough

No-cook recipe

2 cups of plain flour

1 cup of water

1 cup of salt

Encourage your child to mix the flour and salt in a bowl and then add water.  Knead and squeeze the dough to make a clay consistency.  You may need to add more water.

Cooked recipe

3 cups of plain flour

1 ½ cups of salt

6 teaspoons of cream of tartar

3 tablespoons of oil

3 cups of water

Pour all off the ingredients into a large saucepan, stir constantly over a medium heat until a dough ball forms by pulling away from the sides.  Take off heat and knead the dough for 1-2 minutes.  Store in a plastic container and it should last up to three months.

You could create ‘smelly play dough’ by adding ingredients such as mixed spice, mint, lemon, orange or vanilla essence.  Alternatively you could mix in glitter, sequins or rice to create textured play dough.
